Meet Our Founder

Justin Smith

As a third-generation jeweler, designer, and owner of Hourglass Diamonds, Justin Smith has a long family history in the jewelry industry.  Presently based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Justin’s family got their start with their diamond mining operations in South America during the 1950s—and this is what inspired him to attain an educational background as a Graduate Gemologist (GIA). Today, Justin has extensive experience in purchasing and quality control and has overseen a fully equipped diamond laboratory, as well as consulted for other jewelry stores across the US. Additionally, he served as business manager, U.S. lead gemologist and consultant for two of the world’s largest international diamond and gemstone brokerage firms.

  • Our History

Having grown up around a grandfather who had a deep passion for diamonds and gemstones, Justin gained more than just knowledge alone about precious stones and metals. From childhood, Justin listened to stories about the mining of diamonds and running a diamond business—and his curiosity was sparked. As he immersed himself in the diamond industry and its culture, his interests and strengths became clear.

  • Our Origin

While acquiring knowledge and staying up to date with changes and industry evolution is crucial, Justin's greatest enthusiasm lies in connecting with his clients and being a part of significant and memorable milestones in their lives. Therefore, despite having worked for companies at the local, national, and international levels, and partnering with jewelers across the United States in hand-selecting diamonds and gemstones, Justin felt that he was missing what he loved most about the business: working one-on-one with clients. He desired the ability to learn about his clients, understand their needs, and develop long lasting relationships.

And just like that the idea for Hourglass Diamonds was born.

  • Our Vision

Instead of owning a traditional retail jewelry store stocked with inventory that can become outdated when new trends emerge, Justin decided on a different approach. He wanted to begin the journey of creating engagement rings, bracelets, and necklaces with a blank sheet of paper and an engaging conversation, ensuring that the final product aligns with the client's vision and desired budget. For Justin, the sky is the limit when it comes to crafting unique and personalized jewelry pieces—and he cannot wait for the opportunity to do that with you.
